I was sorting through my beer photos a couple of days ago when I spotted a whole bunch of photos of Marble Beers, It was then when I realised I’d not actually written about any of them on here., Im also surprised Dom hasn’t nagged me at some point although other than the Marble facebook group and the odd cheeky comment on here, I dont think he does the internet!
For me Marble are one of the best breweries in the UK, they really do brew so great stuff and are a great bunch of guys who are always up for a laugh too. I dont see many of their cask beers up here so when ever I get a chance to try them or buy their bottles I take it. So when My brewery tap sent me a bottle of each of their current range I was over the moon.
Tawny No 3 ‘Stronge’ to give it it’s full title comes in the traditional Marble branded bottle, simple clean and one I really like. It pours a lovely deep autumnal copper colour, with a lovely fingers width head. It smells quite sweet and fruity, a litlte bit like rum and raisin fudge or butter tablet with slight whiffs of grass. Lovely.
It feels great in the mouth, silky smooth and creamy, it’s malty slighly sweet and a litlte bit bready bready which then moves into grassy, slightly citrusy followed by a quite dry bitter. Its a big beer for its 5.7% ABV and utterly utterly drinkable.
I may have possibly over chilled my first bottle as the flavours became more pronounced as It warmed up, luckily I had another bottle which i served a bit warmer and it was even better, bigger, bolder and dare I say fresher, something that makes it one of those beers you just want to drink more of.
Hats off to Dom, Colin and the guys at Marble, I’m yet to find a beer of theirs that I don’t want to drink on a regular basis, now all the need to do is send more of it to pubs and shops up here.
Read Dom’s Meet the Brewer here. Read my thoughts on other Marble beers here, or buy some here from My Brewery Tap here.
One of my all time favourites…
I love their beers. And Manchester is a great beer city. I’m researching a new book on beer and think that Marble with haver to play a part!
It should also be hats off the James Cambell, the head brewer at Marble, who is often the man who devises the beers (although Tawny 3 was one of Colin’s, hence the “Stronge” on the label).
Thanks for the comments guys!! I look forward to the book Tim, I need to get down to Manchester more!
John – very true James is a Great guy, ill have some more on him soon…
I’m going to go against the grain and say I’m not a massive fan of this one. Nothing wrong with it, it’s perfectly drinkable and not bad or anything, I just find it a bit too bitter. Give me Manchester Bitter all day long!
Chunk.
