I’ve been drinking a lot of Kernel beers of late and to be brutally honest I’ve enjoyed every single one of them. Kernel get a lot of praise and in my opinion, rightly so. They are probably my favourite brewery in the whole wide world at the moment.
S.C.A.NS stands for the hops that are used, Simcoe, Citra, Apollo and Nelson Sauvin, all of which seem to be very popular with various breweries at the moment, especially Citra which seems to be the hop of the moment.
S.C.A.NS pours a lovely clear amber, with an almost peach tinge, the head was great, the aromas were of tropical fruits, heaps of orange and grapefruit.
In the mouth if felt really nicely carbonated, not too heavy or sickly sweet, It was bitter upfront from the hops then there was a sweet almost marmalade flavour and a lovely malty almost toast like backbone, followed by the bitterness again and then some booze, not loads of booze, just enough to let you know that what you’re drinking is nearly 8% ABV.
It’s incredibly drinkable and extremely moreish, I would happily sup a 500ml bottle, although a couple of those could get you into a fair bit of bother and leave you with a rather sore head the next day.
If you want to try some then you can get it from Beermerchants, while you’re there you really should try some of the other Kernel Ales too. You can also visit the Kernel website here or follow them on twitter here.
Love that beer! Have you tried the version with two c’s?
BeerBirraBier.
Yeah had that one too, off the top of my head I think i preferred this one!! although I’ll have to check my notes
Just ordered ten different Kernel beers from the Bottle Shop in Canterbury – that’s going to be one mighty blogpost!
Nice post Andy. This is one of the Kernel beers I’ve not tried. I did however drink the SCCANS on the way to Newcastle a couple of weeks back and loved it.
Kernel are right up there amongst my favourite breweries!
